Greetings, I hope all all had a good weekend. During Monday's lecture we will go over Lab 3: Soil Analysis.  I have posted the relevant material in the Lab 3 folder on LON-CAPA.  We will need to cycle groups through the sieve analysis, so it is important that teams 1 and 2 arrive on time for lab, so that all groups have sufficient time. While the other groups are doing the sieve analysis, you will analyze the filter sand to determine its density and porosity.  You will also examine activated sludge to determine the predominant organisms. Because I am behind in responding to LON-CAPA participation questions, this week's participation question will be done in lecture on Monday. Lab 3 is due Friday, November 10. You are to submit your report with your lab partner(s).  See you in class tomorrow. Dr. Masten P.S. And as usual, a few photos from walks this weekend.

Greetings and Happy Sunday, I hope all of you are enjoying Fall Break. Since we do not have lab on Tuesday, we will not have lab on Thursday either.  However, please remember that Lab 2 is due on Friday, October 27th.  I will not do a participation question this week since we do have class. Sarah will have grades posted by mid-week so you can receive feedback before Lab 2 is due.  If you would like to provide feedback to me as your instructor, feel free to use the mid-semester evaluation .  You can use this for any course you have on campus. On a completely different note: Dr. Tula Ngasala and I are exploring developing a humanitarian engineering minor for engineering students who aspire to work with communities to co-create sustainable and just solutions to the problems they face. I am inviting you to participate in a brief survey to help us determine the level of interest among engineering alumni and students regarding the proposed minor in humanitarian enginee...

Greetings and Happy Sunday! You all did a great job on Lab 2 last week. I believe you all finished the experiment. If not, please let me know as it would require that I go back and sample the pond.  Remember, both sections analyzed the Cornell Woods Retention Pond. More information is available on the blog post about the retention pond. Several groups had asked to share results from Lab 2.  While this is not required, you may share your results on the Google sheet . This week you should plan to use the lab time to write up the lab report, which is due October 27th.  Since Monday and Tuesday, October 23 and 24 are Fall Break, we will not have lab next week.  As such, we will not have lecture this week . I will be available as usual (4-5 PM) in my office for office hours. I can also meet via Zoom if you wish.  There is an online participation question this week, due on Friday.  Sarah will start grading Lab 1 this week so that we can make sure to have grades b...

Greetings, I hope you all had a relaxing weekend. Your wonderful TA has been working on grading Assignment 2.  She is hoping to have grades posted by Wednesday. This week's participation question will be in class on Monday. We will go over Lab 2 in Lecture on Monday.  I have posted the lecture in the Lab 2 folder. I will hold office hours on Monday after class. Sarah has office hours on Zoom on Wednesdays 2-3 PM. Reminder: Lab 1 is due this Friday. Let me know if you want the grace period.  (Sorry for the mistake in the earlier post - only Lab 1 is due this Friday) See you in class tomorrow.  Happy Sunday! It's October already!  Where did August and September go?  I hope you had a relaxing weekend. Your wonderful TA has prepared a list of common errors for Assignment 1. If you would like an extra day to review your work for Assignment 2 based on Sarah's list, I'm happy to allow that. Sarah will post grades for Assignment 1 either tonight or early tomorrow.  Just let me know if you would like until Monday October 2, 2023 to submit (or resubmit) Assignment 2. I've opened up the Participation Question for this week.  It is due Friday, October 6, 11:59 PM. There is nothing else due this week. We will look at monitoring surface water in Lecture on Monday.  I have posted the lecture on Environmental Project Planning in the Lab 2 folder. This week in lab you should plan to finish the LSI lab if you did not do so last week. If you obtained "unusual" results that cannot be explained, you should plan to repeat your work this week. Be sure to include th...
